Bragging Rights
This week I want to take a look at another semi-arbitrary grouping of teams, and see who comes out the best in each group. Wait, that didn't sound as exciting as I intended. This week I want to look at each state, in more depth in some cases than others, and see who gets the mythical Boyd's World State Championship for the year. Winning SID's can contact me and I'll send you a PDF file of a certificate or something, which you can print out and hang next to the intramural league softball plaque the office staff won last year.
There is actually a reason that this stuff can matter. Recruiting is an unpredictable business, but a couple of the facts that we do know about it is that most (not all, but most) recruits tend to stay close to home, that state boundaries play an artificial role in the perception of closeness (and can also affect school costs for baseball players, a certain consideration), and that recent success is one factor that potential players consider. Therefore, being the best in your state can actually be a valuable recruiting edge.
In selecting these, I'll admit that I haven't set a concrete set of criteria that I'm considering. In rough order of importance, I considered overall ISR, record against other state teams, and head-to-head record with other contenders, with conference rank thrown in in the cases where contenders shared a conference. I'll throw all the winners out in one big table, then go back and give you a table of evidence for the cases where I think there's any potential for dispute and let you decide if you think I got them right.
