The Last Decade
I haven't done a column in a while that's been mostly a data dump, but I have one that I want to throw out because I think the numbers may bear watching. I've been revisiting the National College Baseball Archive's treasure trove of historical conference standings again, first referred to in a column I did on all-time conference standings, and this week I want to look at the list of ten-year standings for still existing conferences.
The reason that I want to do this is that I've been thinking about the factors that go into those last few tie-breakers that the committee uses to finish out the field, and I think perceived historical place in the conference may be one of them. I don't think they're sitting there looking at a list like this, and ten years is a purely arbitrary choice on my part, but I want to keep an eye on this list at selection time and see if shows any biases.
Before I go into my comments and the data itself, an administrative note: I've finally taken the plunge and registered the boydsworld.com domain, so beginning next week all of the boydsworld.home.mindspring.com URL's will forward automatically to the same page at www.boydsworld.com. All of your bookmarks and links should still work, but you can probably save a wee bit of time by updating them.
Notes on the standings that follow:
The highest winning percentage of any team who spent at least five years in a league belongs to Wichita State; the lowest to Prairie View A&M (the concept of going 35-179 in the SWAC is a hard one to wrap your mind around). The lowest percentage for a conference leader belongs to Princeton; the Ivy has been very well balanced.
Rutgers was only second in the Atlantic 10 before going on to fame and some success in the Big East. The team they trailed was Virginia Tech; we'll see over the next few years what the effect on their national prospects is.
Wake Forest and North Carolina are both under .500 in conference play over the last ten years.
Only three Big Ten teams were over .500 over that period, which would make you think that Ohio State and Minnesota would have made more of a splash on the national scene.
In the "perception lagging reality" department, Texas is seventh in the all-time Big Twelve standing, lagging Baylor by twenty games already. Interestingly, the only team to win the CWS in that time, Oklahoma, is only fifth.
The Mid-Continent Conference has had an impressive bit of churn, with twenty-two teams playing at least one year in the league.
It's easy to forget that sandwiched between the CWS championship in 1990 and Ron Polk's coming to lead them back to at least the middle of the SEC at the moment, Georgia was the SEC's worst team over the course of the '90's.
