Comprehensive Pitch Count Report 2006
Publication Date: August 1, 2006
Year Five
I apologize for the delay this week; this column was actually ready to go on Thursday, but a cable/internet outage at the house kept me from being able to publish it until tonight. That still leaves them above the 99% uptime rate for the year, so I won't mention names just yet.
For those of you who got here since this time last year, go read at least part of this. This report is an annual part of a long-term research project where I'm tracking pitcher usage numbers for, essentially, every Division I starter along with minor league statistics over a five-year period in order to check for correlations between high workload and future injury or ineffectiveness rates. There are, unavoidably, a ton of numbers here, but they matter, so let's slog on through.
The Hall of Shame
For starters, here are the worst single-game starts from NCAA pitchers last year, with the actual pitch count entries listed first and the estimated counts listed after:

Here are the 100 worst season totals. I'll include a link to the the full list at the bottom.

Team Listings
Here are the twenty highest staff PAP's I could find:
Team GC GE PAP V IV Alabama State 45 45 1058726 7 10 Arkansas-Pine Bluff 43 38 1033724 4 7 South Alabama 60 47 998646 8 11 Southeast Missouri State 56 45 950992 2 6 Norfolk State 51 38 938528 7 10 Old Dominion 47 42 678280 5 16 Chicago State 51 42 670529 5 7 Texas State 59 11 643647 3 8 Siena 53 17 568868 4 11 Savannah State 48 41 544364 5 10 North Dakota State 52 25 516706 4 8 Stephen F. In the interests of fairness to the coaching profession as a whole, here are a few PAP counts that I found admirable. It's not really a lowest list, since that would be too affected by the number of games I could find; it's just a few that I found impressive.
Team GC GE PAP V IV Mount St. Mary's 47 31 65 0 10 LaSalle 51 40 410 0 7 Marist 52 32 880 0 11 Furman 55 45 1049 0 6 Illinois 58 11 1729 0 10 Arizona State 58 5 2081 0 16 Creighton 52 37 2584 0 7 Oakland 58 41 3015 0 8 Kansas 68 57 3300 0 11 IUPU-Fort Wayne 49 40 4358 0 10 Nevada-Las Vegas 59 45 4493 0 8 Army 44 35 4860 0 7 Auburn 56 20 6682 0 11 Hartford 50 41 6698 0 1 Miami, Florida 66 20 7437 0 10 Centenary 53 40 8513 0 15 Wake Forest 43 11 9450 0 11 Towson 53 44 9780 0 13 Santa Clara 52 45 10545 0 10 Stetson 62 28 11056 0 11
Nobody managed a 0 this year, but most of these are in pretty good shape.
Comprehensive Lists
Finally, thorough lists for pitchers and teams:
The pitcher list has every pitcher that accumulated either 8 starts or 100,000 PAP; the team list has every team. Each list, of course, is subject to the limitations of the data that I have. Once again, on the comprehensive lists, I'm going to do something that's different from what I normally do, because I want it to be as accurate a record as possible when I come back to it in a few years -- I will update the records if I get data on additional starts. In response to a request I've had, a list sorted by PAP is linked in from the team report.
